Wild Animal Pest Control Pasco County Education: Will A Strobing Light Or High Pitch Sound Deterrent Machine Work On Rodents?

No matter the type of property you have or where you live, you probably want to keep rodents away. There are multiple ways to do this, but some are more effective than others. For homeowners, two popular options are strobing lights and high pitch sound deterrent machines. Each claims to effectively deter rodents and has a large following online with dozens if not hundreds of success stories. Before you invest in these expensive products, however, you should know that they aren't always successful and few experts recommend them.

How Strobing Light Machines Work
Strobing light machines claim to work by flashing lights continuously. The lights will theoretically startle rodents that approach your property and cause them to turn around and go somewhere else. Some people say that having the light on will discourage animals because they don't like being in bright areas with high visibility. Others say it is the flashing of the light that does it.

How High Pitched Sound Machines Work
The sound machines claim to work by emitting a sound at an ultrasonic or high frequency that humans can't hear but rodents and other animals can. This sound will then frighten away the rodents or at least cause them discomfort but you won't notice it at all.

Always On
One major disadvantage of both types of machines is that they have to be on all the time. You would need one machine for every area you want to keep the animals away from and to leave it operating constantly. This can add a great deal to your electric bill and take up an extra outlet.

Some people also find the devices to be annoying. The strobe lights will be visible to you and your neighbors at all times. While you should not be able to hear the high frequency sound machine, some people will be able to, causing another annoyance.

Don't Work
To make matters worse, neither of these machines is reliably effective. It is true that rodents are typically startled by sounds like those of the high frequency sound machine. The issue, however, comes from the constant noise. These rodents are able to adapt to repeated sounds, making the ultrasonic sound machine ineffective. Most experts will also tell you that the strobing light machines don't work either as rodents seem to simply ignore them.

Instead of wasting money on one of these machines, you should work with a professional to make your property less inviting to rodents. Remove sources of food, water, and shelter and you will be on your way to deterring them and keeping your land clean at the same time.
